Having a Facebook Ads account hacked can have major repercussions on your business – using your money to fund their advertising, having your ad account suspended, and even your account closed altogether.
But there are steps you can take RIGHT NOW to protect your account, and things you can action if it does happen.
- Make sure that you (and everyone that has access to your Ad Account and Business Manager) has two-factor authentication set up for their personal Facebook Account. Not having this set-up is the weak link that hackers use to get access.
- Only have people and partners connected to your Business Manager that need to have access (remove any previous employees, previous agencies, etc).
- Make sure that Two-Factor Authentication is required by all people connected to your account (you can switch this on in the security settings in Business Manager)
- Have at least TWO Admins of the account (if you only have one and you get your account suspended – you lose all access to your advertising).
- Have a long and randomised password that you do not share with any other website logins.
What to do if you Advertising Account is hacked
- Remove any people or partners that don’t need access.
- Turn the scam ads off, but DO NOT delete them (you’ll need to show Facebook evidence of the hack)
- Reduce your spending limit (you can do this in Billing)
- Contact Facebook Support Team immediately (many accounts have direct access to chat support – but don’t know it). You can find this by going to Ads Manager, clicking the ‘Help’ icon and opening ‘Contact Support Team’
- Let your bank know
If Facebook have taken money from your bank, you’ll need to raise a refund claim. Facebook will investigate your claim and if they deem you have been hacked (and have taken all steps possible to secure your account) you will get a refund – but it can take 6 to 8 weeks to come through.
