Meetings, interviews, events – all methods of communication that have changed dramatically due to the effects of the pandemic. Like most businesses, we’ve had to adjust our business model to ensure we are able to deliver the same high quality events that we normally do.
Whilst many of our face to face networking tips are relevant to our online events, there are some variations to consider to maximise these opportunities. Here are some of our online networking tips for you to consider and why not put them to the test at our next event?
- Get to know them
Networking effectively is all about being personable, trustworthy, honest, and most importantly, just being yourself. If you make a new connection online, make sure you do your research – connect on LinkedIn, interact with social posts or blogs shared, or even by simply taking a look at their website. Social media is a great tool to really get to know your contact and if you have a similar interest or hobby, then this makes the connection even greater! It offers a great conversation-starter at events, including online sessions. - Try a warm call
You may recoil at the word “cold-calling”, but have you ever heard of the term “warm call”? Yes, this is a call that you make to the connections that you already know, if you’re looking for assistance or some advice. This is a great way to keep in touch, to show that you value their opinion, and that you truly trust their judgement – no greater compliment really! - Keep your interaction short and sweet
Understandably, this may be a difficult point to consider but keeping your interactions short, snappy, and to the point is a sure-fire way to keep others on the event or meeting fully engaged with you. Try to answer these questions; who you are, what you do, what sort of businesses you’re looking for, if there are any challenges that you may be facing, Likewise, when others are speaking, you should show that you’re listening, that you’re interested, and really try to engage with your fellow attendees. Always try to get to the point you’re trying to make, and if you can, try to mix in some of your own experiences with what you’re looking to achieve. It’s a fine balance to master, but as soon as you do, online networking will be a doddle. - Be grateful for all interaction
Similarly to face to face networking, all interaction is good for you. It’s vital to remember that your connection may not be exactly what you’re looking for to grow your business, but never forget that they have their own, vast, network that could prove absolutely priceless to you. Don’t write anyone or anything off – the future is an exciting thing. - Offer to work collaboratively
Some may scoff at the idea of working for free but have you heard the saying, “you have to speculate to accumulate.” It’s true – getting involved, offering to help in any way you can, is one of the best ways to show that you’re extremely serious and dedicated to what you do. Why not collaborate on an effective piece of content, share ideas and suggestions, or even approach businesses together to create long-lasting, beneficial partnerships?
Online networking is set to stay with us for the long-term – it’s a great way to connect with businesses and entrepreneurs across the world, regardless of location. Why not give the tips above a go?
